This week the activity that we did is called Reader's Theater. We also set students up with a vocabulary worksheet that will be used for an activity in the next week. The regular SSR and TRR sessions were also held.
Reader's Theater
Reader's Theater can be done done several ways and there an excellent webpage on different ways to do it. This is the Website for Reader's Theater. This Document of Reader's Theater is also useful.
Our trainees are quite advanced so they were put into groups of four or three and chose a couple of pages from a book they like and wrote a script together. Then they performed their rendition in front of the class. I found it better to make sure each group did a different book for variety. It was a fun activity and the students had a good time as well. This kind of activity brings the books alive in a way and I recommend it.
Vocabulary Worksheet
We explained exactly how to fill in this Vocabulary Activity Worksheet (this was actually given to our students in week one but continual use is not compulsory in our program. Even though the worksheet seems self explanatory it does help to go through the form exactly. We will use the sheet next week so more to come.
Apart from these activities I met with class captains to discuss the students feedback comments from the session one evaluations. The evaluations were great meaning our students like Extensive Reading.!
A Thank You to Rocky
This semester I am undertaking to teach a twenty week course in Extensive reading. I am working under the mentoring of professor Rocky Nelson who has over fifteen years experience in both implementing and running Extensive Reading courses. Unfortunately Rocky will retire in December this year leaving a void at my university.
This blog is intended for me to keep a record for not only myself in the future but also any other teachers or students interested in developing or partaking in a solidly designed Extensive Reading course, especially for those in Korea. I will try to provide a weekly plan synopsis as I teach the classes and provide links to materials and other supplements.
I hope this site is useful for those that visit.
